Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) was one of the most remarkable and inspiring American figures of the 20th Century. He was a mentor to the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, an early and outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, and a pioneer in the critical work of interfaith dialogue.
Spiritual Audacity: The Abraham Joshua Heschel Story combines archival photographs and rarely seen archival footage, as well as a collection of outstanding interviewees including: Civil Rights leaders Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Young, Pulitzer-prize winning historian Taylor Branch, public theologian Cornel West, Jewish Theological Seminary Chancellor Arnold Eisen, daughter Susannah Heschel and others. Also featured is the artwork of Marc Chagall and his depiction of the Hebrew prophets.
Director
Martin Doblmeier is Founder and President of Journey Films in Alexandria, Virginia. He holds degrees in religion (Providence College) and Broadcast Journalism (Boston University) and three honorary degrees in Fine Arts (Providence College, Andrews University and Loma Linda University).
Doblmeier began his career as a producer for Evening Magazine (nationally syndicated as PM Magazine) at WBZ in Boston, MA (1978-1980). In 1980 he created the first national television magazine program exploring issues of religion – Real to Reel. Based in Washington, DC, the series was syndicated to more than 40 stations including WJZ in Baltimore. Real to Reel continued in syndication for 10 years.
In 1985 Doblmeier founded Journey Films to produce long-format independent documentary films on religion, faith and spirituality for national broadcast. Since that time he has produced 35 award-winning films that have been broadcast primarily on PBS stations but also on NBC, ABC, the History Channel, The BBC and over 20 countries around the world. His films have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Many of his films – including BONHOEFFER, The Power ofForgiveness, The ADVENTISTS, CHAPLAINS, Revolution ofthe Heart have become best selling DVDs.
Since 2013 Doblmeier and Journey Films have been collaborating with Maryland Public Television on a series of documentary films.
