Synopsis

70 HESTER STREET is about the director Casimir Nozkowski’s childhood home, all childhood homes and the lives of old buildings. The 140-year-old building I grew up in was a former synagogue, whiskey still, raincoat factory and art studio my parents rented for 45 years. When the building was sold in 2012, I started filming it just as my parents moved out. I wanted to capture all the history the building contained before its new owner could erase it. I filmed my neighborhood where countless lives had passed through and examined that legacy, the threat of development bearing down on it.

Director

Casimir Nozkowski is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has been seen on TV, online, and in festivals around the world. He’s been interviewed on The Tonight Show, MSNBC, and NPR and featured in the New York Times, The LA Times, Entertainment Weekly, Slate.com, and on NBC and the Brian Lehrer Show. He co-founded and directs the “Internets Celebrities” – an injustice-exposing documentary group (currently making “The Food Warriors” web series) and sits on Rooftop Film’s board of directors. He wrote and produced the first ever trailer for AMC’s “Mad Men” and the very last trailer for AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and launched lots of their campaigns in-between. Recent movies include his sci-fi drama “Next Life” (2014 Phoenix Film Festival premiere) and short documentaries “Childhood Sale” (winner 2013 Comic-Con’s Best Comics-Oriented film award) and “70 Hester Street” (2014 Tribeca Film Festival premiere).
